Leadership is not about control. It's about consistency, clarity, and care.
If I could distill everything I've learned managing people into three words, those would be it. Young managers often get this backwards. They think leadership means being the smartest person in the room or the most powerful.
Consistency means showing up the same way every day. Your team should be able to predict how you'll respond to good news and bad news. Predictable leadership builds trust faster than charismatic leadership ever will.
Clarity means removing ambiguity. People should know what you expect, how they'll be measured, and where they fit into the bigger picture. Confusion breeds anxiety. Clarity breeds confidence.
Care is the hardest because it's the most vulnerable. It means your people matter to you beyond their productivity. It means you invest in their growth even when it's inconvenient. It means you have their back.
Control is easy. Consistency, clarity, and care are harder. They're also what create leaders worth following.
